Warning: Don't get bamboozled by 'Mindset Coaches' during Mental Health Awareness Week (or any other week for that matter!)
Look, it's common knowledge that;
MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ARE ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC HEALTH CHALLENGES WE FACE GLOBALLY...
BUT SO DO UNSCRUPULOUS 'FITNESS PROFESSIONALS'
And that's why you're going to be inundated (during Mental Health Awareness Week) with posts from Personal Trainers trying to market themselves as:
Who promise to help you solve 'whatever ails you' with their 'specialist' service.
But before you even consider handing over your hard earned cash, you need to ask yourself a question...
WOULD YOU GO TO A PSYCHOTHERAPIST FOR A WORKOUT PROGRAMME?
NO! OF COURSE YOU WOULDN'T! SO WHY WOULD YOU GO TO A PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 'MIND-SET' COACHING?
The only thing a Personal Trainer is qualified to instruct is (wait for it)...Exercise!
Personal Trainers simply aren't qualified to delve into the depths of your mind to help you solve problems (that you may have been dealing with since early childhood) in-between a set of burpees!
The reality is that;
90% OF PEOPLE WHO APPROACH PERSONAL TRAINERS WANT TO IMPROVE THE WAY THEY LOOK (I.E. LOSE FAT AND BUILD MUSCLE) SO, THAT (IN TURN) THEY FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES!..
BUTH THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH IS THAT MOST PERSONAL TRAINERS LACK THE EXPERTISE TO FACILITATE SUCH A CHANGE
Which means they'll always come up short when compared to other fitness professionals who can.
So instead of improving their ability as Personal Trainers, they change their marketing message and re-brand as 'Mindset Coaches'
Because as Don Draper once famously said;
"IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT'S BEING SAID, YOU CHANGE THE CONVERSATION"
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that exercise can't improve your mental health...
Because there's a tonne of scientific evidence to support that it can, but;
ANY MENTAL HEALTH IMPROVMENTS BROUGHT ABOUT THROUGH WORKING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER WILL BE A SIDE EFFECT OF THE TRAINING...
NOT THE POUND-SHOP (INTRA-SET) PSYCHOANALYSIS!
So; next time you're tempted to sign up to a 'Mindset Coaching Programme' make sure it's not with a 'Fit Pro' posing as Sigmund Fraud!
