Ever had a guilt trip over missing a training session?
Well, you're not alone, we've all been there!
But here's the thing...
SELF INFLICTED GUILT TRIPS DON'T HELP YOU, ME...OR ANYBODY ELSE FOR THAT MATTER!
So, is it really the end of the world if you miss the odd training session?
No, of course not!
And with everything that's happened in the world recently...
I think it's fair to say that we've got a much clearer perspective on what the end of the world might actually look like.
So, here's the thing;
GUILT REALLY DOESN'T HELP (ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO DIET AND EXERCISE), BECAUSE WHEN YOU DIG DEEP ENOUGH...
YOU'LL OFTEN FIND THAT GUILT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND DESTRUCTIVE LIFESTYLE HABITS (LIKE COMPULSIVE EATING)...
So, let's dispense with the 'guilt-binge-guilt' cycle shall we?
Because it really doesn't matter if you miss the odd training session or eat the occasional meal off plan...
AS IT'S OFTEN THE 'BUYERS REMORSE' THAT YOU FEEL FROM:
THAT CAN SPIRAL INTO MISSING A LOT MORE THAN A SINGE WORKOUT!
Simple; you just have to be honest with yourself and take some responsibility for what you have (or haven't) done...
You didn't 'have to eat the entire chocolate gateau because you had a s**t (or great) day at work'...
YOU'RE JUST CREATING A NARRATIVE TO 'JUSTIFY' THE FACT THAT YOU WANT TO EAT AN ENTIRE CHOCOLATE GATEAU!
But don't worry, we've all done it! Even Personal Trainers!..
I know, Shocking right!?
So let's cut the b******t shall we?..
You ate the 'insert treat' because you wanted to, no more and no less...
Just like you missed the training session because you 'just didn't fancy it'...it's ok it happens!
Just make sure you get plenty of sleep and prepare your food for the following day, so you can get back into your routine...
Give it a day/two and guess what?!..You're back on track.
However, there is a caveat...
THE CAVEAT: YOU CAN'T RIDE 2 HORSES WITH ONE ASS!
And what I mean by that is...
IF YOU'RE ATTEMPTING TO TRANSFORM YOUR BODY (IN THE SHORTEST TIME POSSIBLE) THEN MISSING A FEW WORKOUTS OR OVERINDULGING IN 'SNACKY-SNACKS' WILL SLOW (OR COMPLETELY NEGATE) YOUR PROGRESS...
BUT AS LONG AS YOU'RE WILLING TO ACCEPT THE TRADE OFF, THEN IT'S COOL!
NO GUILT, EMOTIONAL TURMOIL OR BLAMING THE UNIVERSE FOR CONSPIRING AGAINST YOU...
JUST COMPLETE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR DECISION AND THE TRADE OFF THAT YOU'VE MADE.
However, you do need to be honest with yourself about your ability to 'get back on the horse' once you've fallen off it...
Because, if that's something you've always struggled with, then making sure you don't fall off in the first place, maybe your only option...
Especially if your 'deviation' involved alcohol, recreational drugs, or copious amounts of junk food which can leave you feeling worse for wear for days at a time.
